9/20/16 Population

Today in Mr. Schicks class we talked about the population. In 2050 it is estimated that there will be 10 billion people on the earth. We don't have enough food to feed the amount of people here now. Thousands of people suffer with starvation everyday. How are we supposed to have enough for 10 billion people? There won't be. Same thing with jobs. There is many people in this day that are unemployed and are living in poverty. This is only going to get worse as the population increases. Many jobs in America hire workers from other countries to work for their companies because they don't have to pay them as much. For example, here in the U.S there is a minimum wage of roughly $8. If you hire someone from india you may only have to pay them $4. We also learned that people who live in China are significantly smarter then those in the U.S. In America we have about 61 babies per 7 minutes. In India you have about 315 babies being born every 7 minutes. Moe babies are being born then people dying.

First Test

I felt that todays test wasn't to hard. It wasn't that easy either but i feel that we had gone over in class everything that was on the test. I was prepared because of the way Mr. Schick reviewed with us. I think that even if you didn't study you could still get a good grade on this because we spent so many days going over it. Nothing was too challenging. They were all able to be answered. I hope i did GOOD!!

9/13/16 The Death of Socrates

Today in Mr. Schick's class we talked more about Socrates. Socrates wanted children to have their own beliefs and not be forced to make decisions based off of what everyone else does. However the "government" of that time thought it was illegal for him to do such. He was taken to court and 500 men found him guilty. He was to be sentenced to death. But heres the twist, if you were in that much trouble that you were going to be killed wouldn't you do what you could to stay alive. Thats what some of the officials thought however Socrates didn't feel the same way. He admitted to his crimes which made them confirm their decision on killing him. He didn't say "oh well i won't ever do it again" because he felt that what he did was right and that if he was going to be killed for something he did good it didn't bother him. So in the end some officials wanted to break him out of jail but Socrates rejected the offer and was satisfied with being killed. He drank poison hemlock to kill himself.

Socratic Method

Today in class Mr. Schick used the Socratic Method in order to give us an idea on what it was. Back in the ancient Greek days, Socrates used this method in order to get someones beliefs on a topic. These usually related to what the pharoah would say at the agora. They would stand on a stage type thing and tell the people new rules. They were seen at the top of society. They could do no wrong. So in class Mr. Schick gave us an example of the socratic method. We discussed Colin Kaepernick. We said our opinions on it but Mr. Schick never told us what was right and what was wrong. He wanted to hear our beliefs on this subject. He never expressed his own opinion but he asked questions to help clarify our thoughts. This was a great way to show us an example of how Socrates handled these situations.

9/9/16 Blog review

Today in Mr. Schick's class, we just reviewed our blogs. He went around and made sure everyone's blog was where it was supposed to be and that they were posting things correctly.

Excellence- A Message to Garcia

A message to Garcia was published as an inspirational essay in March, 1899. It became very popular and was reprinted as a pamphlet and a book. It was made into two different movies in 1916 and 1936. This event took place in the Spanish- American war. Garcia was a revolutionary seeking independence fro Spain. Rowan was the army officer that this book is mainly about. He was the one who took the message to Garcia. President William Mckinley was the 25th president from 1897-1901. He was assasinated 6 months into his second term by an anarchist . The tallest mountain in North America was renamed after him. It was originally named Denali and then changed to mount Mckinley, then back to Denali last year. Many people were known as slipshod. A slipshod is sloppy, careless, lackadaisical, slapdash, and remiss. They often wrote things in shorthand.

Mr. Schicks Expectations

Today was Mr. Schicks first day back. He told us his class expectations. For example he wants us to post a blog every night covering what we did in class that day. We don't have to post one if we didn't meet that day. If you are absent on a day we meet, you are still responsible for posting a blog explaining why you are absent. He also wants us to hand write all of our notes in our composition books. Apparently you take in more when you hand write things rather then typing it on your computer. He explained that each blog is only 2 points but they are a easy 2 points. They all add up at the end of the quarter and end up being worth as much as a test. He also explained what to do if we are going to leave early or are going to be absent. He wants us to tell him before so that he's prepared for us to not be in class.
