Christianity in the Pax Romana

Begins with Jesus. Comes from the Gospels which means good news. Jesus was a Jewish itinerant preacher in Judea who taught Gods personal relationship. Jesus was a threat to Roman rule. After reading the letter of Paul, both Jews and Christians were monotheistic. They refused to worship Roman gods. Early in the Pax Romana, it was easy to travel and to spread ideas. Romans were a receptive audience. Jews and Christians were sometimes prosecuted because they went against Roman law. Christianity embraced all people, gave hope to the powerless, appealed to those who were disgusted by Rome, offered a personal relationship with God, and promised eternal life after death. Roman emperor Constantine sees an image that says in this sign, conquer. He orders troops to put a cross on shields and they end up winning. In 313 the emperor approves Christianity. In 380 it becomes the official religion. The Roman military was too weak. The taxes were too high. There was a population decrease. Division of the empire. The last Roman emperor was in 476.

After Rome Test

Today we went over the Rome test. I got a 72 and i thought i did much better. Apparently everyone felt that way... not many people got the grade they thought they were going to get. Most of the questions i got wrong were on the emperor part. I also got a lot wrong on the Punic war part. We also went over the Pax Romana slideshow about Christianity.

Test day

Today in class we took a test. I studied last night before I went to bed. I think i did REALLLLLY good on it. There was only about 3 problems that i didn't really know. Using process of elimination I think i got the right answer. I think i got a high A on the test. It was one of the easiest this year. However the powerpoint was Soooooooooo long and unnecessary but i learned the material. I took really good notes which helped me in the end.

Rome

Today in class we went over what was going to be on the test. Octavian forces Lepidus to retire. He and Mark Antony become rivals. Mark Antony get with Cleopatria of Egypt personally, politically, economically, and militarily. Octavian defeats them at the battle of Actium. Octavian became the unchallenged ruler of Rome. He was called Agustus and Imperator. Now Rome is an empire, not a republic. Ruled for 40 years. He began a stable era of peace and prosperity known as Pax Romana. Pax Romana was 207 years long. He expanded the Roman Empire into Africa. He set up civil service to run the government. Octavian died because of natural causes. Power was passed down to emperors who were bad.

Rome

Tiberius ruled from AD 14 to AD 37. He was a good general but a reluctant emperor. After the death of his son he exiled himself from Rome and left his prefects in charge. He died at age 77.
Caligula ruled from AD 37 to AD 41. He won a power struggle after Tiberiusdies. He was known for cruelty, extravagance, and perversity. He was an insane tyrant. He was assassinated by praetorian guards, Senators, and the imperial court trying to re-establish the republic.
Claudius ruled from AD41 to AD54. Many think he had cerebral palsy. He took over because he was the last male left in the family. He ruled well and ended up starting the conquest of Britian. He died by poisoning. This was his wife's plan so the son could rule.
Nero ruled from 54-68. He was big on arts. There was a huge fire in 64. He wanted Rome to be more majestic. He over spent, raided the temples for money. Historians don't look kindly on him.

Rome

Julius Caesar
Lived from 100-44 BCE. He was a highly successful general. He conquered the area Gaul. People liked him. He was a really good speaker. He was friends with Pompey (a general who conquered Syria and Palestine) and Crassus (richest man in Rome, one of the richest men in all history). Those 3 men formed the First Triumvirate "rule of 3 men". Julius served as a consul (one year). He said he was the governor of Gaul. Pompey gets jealous, becomes his rival. Caesars armies clash with Pompey's in Greece, Asia, Spain, and Egypt. Caesar was winning. in 44BC he is named dictator first for 6 months then for life. Caesar is granted citizenship to people in provinces. He expanded the Senate and created jobs for the poor through public works projects. He also increased pay for soldiers. He started colonies where those with out land could own property. Caesar was assassinated in the Senate because he was stabbed 23 times. Julius Caesars grandnephew and adopted son Octavian takes over at 18. The second Triumvirate consists of Mark Antony, Lepidus, and Octavian.

Rome part 2

Consuls are elected officials. They run for one year. They are always aristocrats (patricians). Patricians traced their descent from a famous ancestor or pater (father). One consul can veto another. 5th century BCE- patrician dominance of the government was challenged by the plebs (people). Plebs were 98% of the population. They dominated. Plebs were victims of discriminatory decisions in judicial trials. Rome had no actual laws, just unwritten customs. Plebs refused to serve in the military until laws were written out, these laws were posted in the public, and tribunes were elected. SPQR- Senatus Populusque Romanum, the roman senate and people. The US modeled their government off of Rome, they both have 3 branches, and both have a legal code.

Rome

The Latins were the first to settle. They were descendants of Indo-Europeans. They settled on the banks of the Tiber River. It was situated so trading ships could navigate to Rome. There was ports built on 7 hills. The Etruscans also settled there. They came from the north-central part of the peninsula. They were metal workers, artists, and architects. The 2 foundation Myths were the Virgils Aeneid and the story of Remus and Romulus. The Greeks had many colonies around the Mediterranean Sea. The Romans borrowed ideas from them such as: religious beliefs, alphabet, much of their art, military techniques and weaponry. Roman settlers drained a swamp. Many settlers flowed into the Tiber. There was a marshy area called the Forum between Palatine and Capitoline Hills. Tarquin the Proud's grandfather built the Cloaca Maxima (largest drain) which led water into the Tiber. An Urban Legend says Washington D.C was built on a swamp, but only 2% was swampland. Lucas Tarquinias Superbus was the 7th and FINAL king of Rome. He was known as Tarquin the Proud. He was a tyrant z

Alexander the Great Movie

Today in class we watched a movie about Alexander the Great. It was the war with the Persians and the Macedonians. There was a lot of blood. Some of it was really gross. It was cool to look at the phalanx in action. We had always talked about it in class but i had never seen it actually happen in war. The movie also showed a little boy who was trained for the army and he got his first horse. He learned how to ride it. His village men and parents were all very happy for him.

Presentations Day 4

Today in class we talked about the greek olympics. Their project was funny because they acted out all of the sports and they were not good at them. The sports they showed was running, throwing a discus, wrestling, and a jump. His project was very short and didn't really do a good job at keeping our attention. I feel that it should've been longer. Lastly Rex presented and i couldn't really understand what he was saying. He kind of jumped all over the place and was unorganized.

Presentations day 3

Today Sarah presented and her project was about greek mathematics. It was very interesting and she knew a lot about the subject. She explained how her mother bought her all of these math books when she was 12 to read. This is probably why she is so smart. She told us about all of these theorems that were proven wrong. Next was Lilly, their presentation was about the Socrates. At the end of the presentation she asked the class to use stones to vote, just as they did in ancient Greece. The funniest part was at the end she exed out of the powerpoint and her background was on the screen and it was inappropriate.

Presentations day 2

Today I saw a presentation on the greek olympics. Their project was funny because they acted out all of the sports and they were not good at them. The sports they showed was running, throwing a discus, wrestling, and a jump. Another project that i saw was another trireme. John was very creative and created his own ship out of toothpicks. It looked just like the pictures. Aiden presented his project and had greek food at the end that included cookies, chips, dip, and bread. He made all of it. Lastly, Anna and I presented. It was really funny because we are not good actors.

presentations day 1

Today was the first day of presentations. Caleb, Malik, and Cross presented first. They did their project on food of ancient Greece. I think this was very interesting. They kept the class's attention the whole time. It wasn't boring to watch. The best part was, they brought in all sorts of food. They had bread, crackers, broccoli, olives, grape water, and pastries. This allowed the class to get a taste of what eating in Greece was like. Colby, Will, and Brad went next. Their project was about the triremes, which are boats that would capture other ships. This one was not very entertaining. It was boring. They didn't have much interest in what they were doing.

*TUESDAY*

*WEDNESDAY*

Medusa: My lips, so plump, are in fact redder than the reddest rose in the world!

Narrator: Then Medusa and a couple of her friends traveled to the Parthenon, the biggest temple in Greece. While she was looking at the statues of Athena she continued to boast about herself and say that it would look better if it was her. The people around her who worshipped Athena were shocked by this. They all left the temple because they knew Athena would hear and be furious.

Athena: Vain and foolish girl! You think your a prettier girl than me. While other people are working, playing or learning, you just boast about yourself. Medusa there is more to life than beauty alone, you see.

Medusa: My beauty is an inspiration to others around me. I make their lives better by simply looking so pretty.

Athena: Nonsense! One day beauty will fade away. But I will make it fade away now and all your loveliness will be gone forever.

Narrator: Athena then turned Medusa into an ugly monster with hissing snakes as hair and her body turned to a snake.

Athena: Are you happy for what I have done? Now anyone who looks in your eyes will now turn into stone and no one will be able to save them.Even you, Medusa, should you seek your reflection, will turn to rock the moment you see your face.

Narrator: Athena then sent Medusa to the end of the earth with the gorgon sisters and the blind monsters so that no innocent people would be turned into stone by the sight of Medusa accidently.

Ancient Greece Test

I believe I got a low b on this test. Some of the questions that were about the dates i didn't get because i didn't know we were supposed to remember dates. I know that we learned everything that was on the test though. Sometimes teachers put on the test questions that they never taught us. But normally his tests are fair and cover everything that we learned. I don't think there has been a time yet where he didn't make the test fair. Hopefully i did better then i thought even though its going on 4th quarter.

Philosophers

Plato was another philosopher who came after Socrates. He was a student and follower of Socrates. He wrote out Socrates' techniques and teachings. Plate wrote "Republic" which was based on justice and the ideal state. He felt that people who thought like him and taught like him were the best and should be the rulers of Athens. Aristotle was after Plato. He was a student of Plato. He helped make Athens a intellectual destination. So if you wanted to learn something new you could just come to Athens. He created a school called "Lyceum". He didn't invent the internet but he was the one who created the idea to have all mankind knowledge in one spot. He tutored Alexander the Great who ended up being one of the best conquerers.

Persian Wars

Persian empire vs Greece. The Greek army had iron weapons, trained soldiers, they were armed, they used phalanx, they had the home field advantage, and were motivated to preserve democracy. The Persian army first had archers, then calvary (disrupt communication between generals and soldiers), they had a lightly armored infantry so they were fast, they came in huge numbers, and had a professional army. Philosopherlapalooza also known as Socrates looked into science and logic for explanations on how the world worked. He created the Socratic Method. He was charged with 2 serious crimes: impiety, disrespecting the Gods; and corrupting the youth of Athens. He didn't deny what he did, he actually asked for dinners. He was killed by drinking poison hemlock.

Poseiden is the god of sea. He interfered with Odysseus trying to return home. Aphrodite is the goddess of love. She had lovers of both gods and men. Dionysus is the god of wine. He was the son of Zeus and of Semele. Zeus was the ruler of heaven and earth, father of Athena. He had a temper and threw thunderbolts. Athena was the goddess of wisdom, skill, warfare, peace, intelligence, battle strategy, and handicrafts. She was born from Zeus' head fully formed. Athens was named after her. Apollo was the god of music, arts, knowledge, and healing. Zeus was his father and Artemis was his twin sister. He was the sun and the sister was the moon. Poseidon was the god of water and the brother of Zeus. Aphrodite was the goddess of love and sexuality. Her lovers included Ares, Adonis, and Anchises. Demeter was the goddess of grain, harvest, and agriculture. She was Zeus' sister.

Greeks were war-like people. Spartans were known for their tough infantry (soldiers who fought on land). Spartan Boys began to train at age 7. Athens had a great infantry too. However, they had the best navy. Their best weapon was the trireme (fast ship). The phalanx was a group of men who stood very close together and marched with spears. It was like a human tank.

Cleisthenes and democracy

Cleisthenes was a member of the elite. He was very rich and a crafty politician. He was the only one to listen to the middle class. He got regular folks involved in governing. Citizens could participate but only 1/5 of the people were citizens. A citizen is a white male who owns land and was born in Athens. Athens practiced a direct democracy. In a direct democracy the state is ruled by its citizens. The rule is based on citizenship. Majority rule decides the votes. This is held in the agora. It was first practiced in Athens under Cleisthenes by 500 BCE.

Greece

Polis is a fundamental political unit. A political term for town. Monarchy is rule by a single person. Aristocracy is rule by a small group of noble, very rich, property owning families. Oligarchy is wealthy groups, dissatisfied with aristocratic rule who seized power. A tyrant is a powerful individual who seized control by appealing to the common people for support. During the 7th and 6th centuries BCE, aristocrats ran the show in most of Greece. Aristocrats are members of the ruling class. They attended symposiums, meetings where men decisions and chill with women. Aristocrats formed alliances with hoplites (well armed soldiers) and set up a government called tyranny. A tyrant is someone who rules outside the framework of the polis. Draco 621 BCE said all Athenians were equal, death is a punishment for crime, debt slavery is ok. Solons thought the opposite. Cleisthenes allowed citizens to submit laws for debate. Created the Council of 500. Only free male property owning born in Athens were considered citizens. Clash of the Tyrants. Hippies was a tyrant who ruled from 527-510 BCE. His brother was murdered and his rule was harsh. He was expelled from Athens. He worked with Persian king Darius 1, helping them invade Marathon. Isagoras and Cleisthenes engaged in a power struggle. Isagorous had support from aristocrats, even from Sparta. Cleisthenes had support from most of the Athenians. Isagorous won and became the tyrant. Athenians revolted against Isagorous. They trapped him and he fled. 508 BCE was the first time common citizens revolted their leader.

Greece

Fertile valleys cover 1/4 of Greece-20% suitable for farming. Greeks mainly ate grains, grapes, and olives. The lack of resources led to Greek colonization. Temperatures were moderate year long there back then. The Mycenaeans influence began in 2000 BCE. Mycenae is located on a rocky ridge of Peloponnesus protected by a 20Ft wall. Kings dominated Greece from 1600-1100 BCE. Kings controlled trade. 1400 BCE- Mycenaeans invaded Crete and absorbed Minoan culture. The Trojan war was about Gods and Goddesses in the 12th or 13th century BCE. 1200 BCE the sea people invaded Mycenae and burned many of their palaces. Dorians moved into the war- torn region dominating from 1150-750 BCE. Dorians were less advanced. Their writings disappeared for 400 years. Homer the Bard wrote 2 stories: The Illiad and the Odyssey.

Ancient Greece

The 4 main civilizations are Mesopotamia (Tigris and Euphrates), Egypt (Nile), India (Indus), and China (Huang He). The Greeks thought of the Mediterranean Sea as the center of the world. The Adriatic Sea, Ionian Sea, and Aegean Sea surrounded Greece. Greece is located in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea. It is very mountainous and easier to cross by water. Crete is a large island South of Greece. Greece is a peninsula with mountains that cover 3/4 of it. There is 2000+ islands among these seas. Greece has limited resources so they had to trade often. It was difficult to unite Greece because of the terrain. They developed small, independent, city states. Their jobs included sailors, shipbuilders, farmers, metal workers, weavers, and potters.

Test Review

Today in class we went over the test. I got a 92%. Yesterday we took our second test. I LOVE MR SCHICK FOR LETTING US USE OUR BLOGS, or else i would've been screwed. I didn't study for the test which was bad on my part so i got out lucky on this one. I felt as though with the blogs I got a really good grade. Without them however i would've failed. Not even exaggerating. However, i do take time in my blogs just in case something like this were to happen, and thankfully it did. Sucks for the people who don't take time on their blogs. Once again I just want to say THANK YOU MR SCHICK. I think i got an A. There wasn't any problem that I think i got wrong or i wasn't sure about. Well maybe on the last page.

6-10 Amendments

The seventh Amendment is the jury on can have a trial in civil cases (if not too petty). The eighth Amendment is that the judge has to set reasonable bail and possible fines. SO the bail depends on the crime. The worse the crime the higher the bail so its harder to get them out. There cannot be cruel or unusual punishment. Meaning you're not going to get killed if you were drunk while driving since its not a major crime that results in death/execution. The ninth amendment is that people have their rights, even if they aren't listed in the Constitution. Mr. Schick said this wasn't an important one we had to remember and that it wouldn't be on the test. The tenth amendment is also that people have their rights. Its just like the ninth amendment.

First 6 Amendments

Article one is about the 5 freedoms which are freedom of religion, speech, press, right to assemble, right to petition the government. The second amendment is about the right to bear arms. The third is that you cannot quarter. The fourth is you cannot have unreasonable searches or seizures. The fifth is that you need to be invited by a Grand Jury for a capital or otherwise infamous crime. You cannot be tried twice even if evidence shows up after the first trial. You cannot self incriminate. The sixth is that you have the right to a speedy and public jury. Everyone is granted a lawyer no matter what.
Today Cross taught the class because he is really smart and i don't know how he does it.

5 Freedoms and North Korea

Today in Mr. Schicks class we talked about North Korea and the 5 freedoms. The 5 freedoms are: freedom of speech, press, right to assemble, religion, and right to petition the government. We talked about how North Korea was very strict and their leader has brainwashed the country. No one is allowed to leave or enter in North Korea. They admire their leader as like a god. It could even be the craziest thing like they got surgery and instead of thanking the doctor they go to their leader and thank him. I also heard that a man went to his leader and bought a gun telling him that he was going to kill as many Americans as he could with it. Their leader kills many Koreans within its own country if they do not like what he does. One time a person laid in front of his statue and was treated to be executed from the country. Someone also mentioned that they built a fake city to attract people and then took them captive.

Articles Presentation Part 2

Today in class we talked about voting. We talked about how we all will be able to vote in the next presidential election. However i asked "If I don't pay attention to the elections, should I not vote?" The answer was that it is up to me and that he thinks I should pay attention to it because I live in America. We also talked about how the President only makes $400,000 a year. In my head i was thinking that a local anesthesiologist make almost that and does not have nearly as much power. We also talked about Article 3 in the Constitution. This article is all about the judicial branch and how the judicial system includes one Supreme Court. Big cases go to the Supreme Court. No one can override the Supreme Courts decisions. It consists of 9 justices and is the most powerful court in the United States of America. All judges serve lifelong terms. The only way they live the position is if they die, resign, or commit a federal crime. Treason is an example of a federal crime.

Article Presentations

Article 1 talks about the legislative branch. There is two houses of Congress which are the House or Representatives and the Senate. There are 435 people in the House of Representatives. There is 100 people in the Senate. The number of Congressmen depends on the population of the state. However, every single state has 2 senators. They have to get re-elected every 2 years. Senators are in office for 6 years. The Congress are the ones who are responsible for passing laws. It then goes to the President to be confirmed or appealed. If 2/3 of the Senate over ride the Presidents veto, the law is able to be passed. Congress can impose taxes and declare war.
Article 2 is all about the president. It states his power and duties. Each president has to take the oath on the Bible. It states that you have to protect, preserve, and defend the Constitution. They have to do the State of the Union each year. You can impeach a president.

Article 5 Day 2

Today in Western Civ, we continued to work on our Article project. We added Kp to our group. Today Mr. Schick was not here. Here is some more information on Article 5...Future generations can amend the Constitution if the society so requires it. Both the states and Congress have the power to initiate the amendment process. There are 27 Amendments. At least ⅔ of The House of Representatives and Senate must approve the amendment. The Amendments were made to protect the rights of the people. Article 5 is a single paragraphs telling how you can change or add to the U.S Constitution.   Article 5 of the US Constitution states that constitutional amendments have to be passed by a two-thirds majority in both houses of the legislature. The amendment must then be ratified by three-fourths of states. and then by the states. Alternative procedures are also provided, but these are rarely used.

Test Review

I did well on my test. I got a 92%. I thought the test was really easy. I did really good on the multiple choice part but I  bombed the last essay. I had no clue what it was about and I don't remember learning about it at all sooo. However I aced the Paul revere question because I know the poem like the back of my hand. I'm still really confused about the last essay question about the Declaration of Independence.  I think the last question was unfair because we didn't learn 3 distinct sections of the Declaration of Independence we just talked about little parts of it.

Article 5

Today in class we talked about electoral votes. We learned that the state of Wyoming only has 2 electoral votes whereas the state of California has 55. However, Wyomings votes impact the election more then California does. We also did group projects about the Articles in the Constitution. The article I was assigned was article number 5. This article is all about single paragraph telling how you can change or add to the U.S Constitution. The only way that changes can be made to the Constitution, is if new amendments are added to it; no other clause or forms of change can take place, apart from this, when the government, or any one party is attempting to make new rules or amend the Constitution.

Building a New Government 1780-1800

In class we learned about the second continental congress and the Articles of Confederation. The articles of confederation was written in 1777 by colonial leaders. It was ratified in 1781 and was Americas first constitution. It provided a framework for for the new nation to do "nation things". The good that came from the A O C was it named the country the United States, it established a diplomacy, and set up trade with other nations. The problems with the A O C was the states thought they were their own countries. They didn't want to be under one federal government because they just left the British. They decided that each state would be pat of "Congress of Confederation" and everyone would be able to vote. US expenses would be paid by the individual states and the bigger and richer states would pay more. Debt couldn't be paid because Congress wouldn't collect taxes. Each state operated independently. They all printed their own money. There was no court to settle disputes between states. Britain had to cut off trade so the US had to find new trading partners. Alexander Hamilton wants a national bank. Thomas Jefferson wants the states to handle themselves.

Today in western civ we were told to look up the Articles of Confederation, the constitution, and the Bill of Rights.

Articles of Confederation: An agreement between all 13 states in the US that served as its first constitution. It was the first written constitution of the US. It was written during the Revolutionary war. It was written to give the colonies some sense of a unified government. Became affective on March 1, 1781.The Articles of Confederation gave Congress the power to govern foreign affairs, conduct war and regulate currency; however, in reality these powers were sharply limited because Congress had no authority to enforce its requests to the states for money or troops.

Constitution: All laws come from the Constitution. Was completed on September 17, 1787. The Constitution is the second of the three Charters of Freedom along with the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of rights, with later amendments. The U.S. Constitution established America’s national government and fundamental laws, and guaranteed certain basic rights for its citizens. George Washington was the first to sign the document. Of the 55 delegates, a total of 39 signed

Bill of Rights: 10 amendments guaranteeing basic individual protections such as freedom of speech and religion–became part of the Constitution in 1791. To date, there have been a total of 27 constitutional amendments. On September 25, 1789, Congress adopted 12 of the amendments and sent them to the states for ratification. Ten of these amendments, known collectively as the Bill of Rights, were ratified and became part of the Constitution on December 10, 1791. The Bill of Rights guarantees individuals certain basic protections as citizens, including freedom of speech, religion and the press; the right to bear and keep arms; the right to peaceably assemble; protection from unreasonable search and seizure; and the right to a speedy and public trial by an impartial jury.

First test in western civ

Today we took our first test in western civ. I think I did really good on the multiple choice part but I think I bombed the last essay. I had no clue what it was about and I don't remember learning about it at all sooo. However I know I aced the Paul revere question because I know the poem like the back of my hand. I'm still really confused about the last essay question about the Declaration of Independence so I know I definitely got a 0/15 on that but oh well, not the first time. I think the last question was unfair because we didn't learn 3 distinct sections of the Declaration of Independence we just talked about little parts of it. So if I get a bad grade I'm going to ask Mr. Schick where and when we learned that. Once again I failed the last question if you didn't et it the first time.

DOI Test Review

Today in class we watched a video and stopped throughout it to talk about certain lines in the Declaration of Independence.  Jefferson wrote that if a government does not protect the rights of citizens, people have the right to form a new government. This idea was not new. Jefferson used ideas that John Locke and other English thinkers had written about. Jefferson listed many ways that Britain had not served the colonists. He wrote, for example, that King George had tried to take away rights and force taxes on the colonies. Jefferson showed that the colonists had a right to separate from the king and have their own government. We also reviewed the material for our test tomorrow. It is from slides 1-28 in the 85 slide powerpoint.

Declaration of Independence

Today in class we watched a video and stopped throughout it to talk about certain lines in the Declaration of Independence. One thing that stuck out to me is that written in the DOI it states " all men are created equal" however at the time slavery still existed. Also women didn't have any rights at the time. Jefferson wrote that if a government does not protect the rights of citizens, people have the right to form a new government. This idea was not new. Jefferson used ideas that John Locke and other English thinkers had written about. Jefferson listed many ways that Britain had not served the colonists. American Revolution Review

We learned about the American Revolution. Any men from the ages of 16-60 had to be ready to fight in a minutes notice. They were known as minutemen. The colonists stored guns and ammunition at Concord. The British tried to go and destroy their weapons. Colonists were watching them and warned the minutemen. Paul Revere, William Dawes, and Samuel Prescott were to go through the towns and let everyone know.  Representatives from every colony except Georgia showed up. This is because Georgia was fighting a Native American uprising and needed British supplies. Congress made a Declaration of Rights which affirmed its loyalty to British crown allowing the right for British to tax it. Congress passed Articles of Association to atop importing goods from the British if the intolerable acts were not repealed.

Declaration of Independence

On June 11, 1776 the Continental Congress gathered five leaders. They were called the Committee of Five. They were told to complete a document explaining why they were declaring their independence. The five members were Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Robert Livingston, Roger Sherman, and Thomas Jefferson.Thomas Jefferson wrote the first draft. In this document, Jefferson wrote what many Americans believed about their rights. Jefferson wrote that people have the right to live, the right to be free, and the right to seek happiness. The Declaration explains why the colonies should break away from Britain. It says that people have rights that cannot be taken away, lists the complaints against the king, and argues that the colonies have to be free to protect the colonists’ rights. Thomas Jefferson presented it to Congress on June 28, 1776. Some people didn't want to declare independence but others did. On July 4, 1776 the Congress officially adopted the final version of the Declaration of Independence.

American Revolution/ First Continental Congress

In Mr. Schicks class we learned about the First Continental Congress. On Sept 5th 1774, colonial leaders met in Phili.

Boston Massacre

The colonists decided to boycott British goods. The Boston Massacre broke out on March 5th, 1770. 5 colonists were killed. After the Massacre the British repealed most of the township acts. However they did not repeal the tax tea because they wanted to show superiority. The British passed a law saying the colonists could only buy tea from the British. This put the colonists tea companies out of business. The Boston Tea party happened in December 1773 and was lead by Samuel Adams. The colonists dressed like Native Americans. To rebel they dumped the British tea into the water. The British leaders punished the colonists by banning public meetings, closing the Boston Harbor, and sending more British soldiers to Boston. The colonists called these new laws the Intolerable Acts.

French and Indian War

Today in class i learned about the French and Indian war. It all started when the French had control over the Ohio River valley and Great Britain wanted to take that land. The French were allies with the Indians and they fought against Great Britain. Britains army was much better then the French. They had a million redcoats to their 65,000 french people. They had more advanced weapons. However, the French took a surprise lead in the fist battle killing many of the British. The British made a comeback and won the war resulting in the Ohio River Valley. The British then proceeded to enforce many taxes on the colonists.

First day of western civ

Today was the first day of Western Civ. Mr. Schick told us his class expectations. For example he wants us to post a blog every night covering what we did in class that day. We don't have to post one if we didn't meet that day. If you are absent on a day we meet, you are still responsible for posting a blog explaining why you are absent. He also wants us to hand write all of our notes in our composition books. Apparently you take in more when you hand write things rather then typing it on your computer. He explained that each blog is only 2 points but they are a easy 2 points. They all add up at the end of the quarter and end up being worth as much as a test. He also explained what to do if we are going to leave early or are going to be absent. He wants us to tell him before so that he's prepared for us to not be in class.
