Rome part 2

Consuls are elected officials. They run for one year. They are always aristocrats (patricians). Patricians traced their descent from a famous ancestor or pater (father). One consul can veto another. 5th century BCE- patrician dominance of the government was challenged by the plebs (people). Plebs were 98% of the population. They dominated. Plebs were victims of discriminatory decisions in judicial trials. Rome had no actual laws, just unwritten customs. Plebs refused to serve in the military until laws were written out, these laws were posted in the public, and tribunes were elected. SPQR- Senatus Populusque Romanum, the roman senate and people. The US modeled their government off of Rome, they both have 3 branches, and both have a legal code.
