Rome
The Latins were the first to settle. They were descendants of Indo-Europeans. They settled on the banks of the Tiber River. It was situated so trading ships could navigate to Rome. There was ports built on 7 hills. The Etruscans also settled there. They came from the north-central part of the peninsula. They were metal workers, artists, and architects. The 2 foundation Myths were the Virgils Aeneid and the story of Remus and Romulus. The Greeks had many colonies around the Mediterranean Sea. The Romans borrowed ideas from them such as: religious beliefs, alphabet, much of their art, military techniques and weaponry. Roman settlers drained a swamp. Many settlers flowed into the Tiber. There was a marshy area called the Forum between Palatine and Capitoline Hills. Tarquin the Proud's grandfather built the Cloaca Maxima (largest drain) which led water into the Tiber.
