Greek God and Goddesses

Poseiden is the god of sea. He interfered with Odysseus trying to return home. Aphrodite is the goddess of love. She had lovers of both gods and men. Dionysus is the god of wine. He was the son of Zeus and of Semele. Zeus was the ruler of heaven and earth, father of Athena. He had a temper and threw thunderbolts. Athena was the goddess of wisdom, skill, warfare, peace, intelligence, battle strategy, and handicrafts. She was born from Zeus' head fully formed. Athens was named after her. Apollo was the god of music, arts, knowledge, and healing. Zeus was his father and Artemis was his twin sister. He was the sun and the sister was the moon. Poseidon was the god of water and the brother of Zeus. Aphrodite was the goddess of love and sexuality. Her lovers included Ares, Adonis, and Anchises. Demeter was the goddess of grain, harvest, and agriculture. She was Zeus' sister.

Greeks were war-like people. Spartans were known for their tough infantry (soldiers who fought on land). Spartan Boys began to train at age 7. Athens had a great infantry too. However, they had the best navy. Their best weapon was the trireme (fast ship). The phalanx was a group of men who stood very close together and marched with spears. It was like a human tank.
